I wanted to take this opportunity to clear up some misunderstanding about our medication policy.
At the beginning of the school year a medication form is sent home with students. This form only needs to be filled out IF your child is on a routine medication.
Our medication policy here at DMS states that ideally any medication that the student is on should be given at home but on the occasion that they would need to have medication throughout the day, the medication form must be filled out to its entirety.
The three main components that we MUST have in order to give your child a medication are; a parents signature, the medication with dosage written out and the doctors signature. The medication must then be brought to the school BY THE PARENT and in the ORIGINAL bottle. This must be done every year, meaning a prescription written by a doctor during the 6th grade is not automatically carried over into the 7th grade. In fact, medications that are not picked up at the end of the year by the parent are discarded.
Medications for grades K-8 are defined as any prescription drug AND any over-the-counter medications such as Advil, Tylenol and cough drops (yes,cough drops). These must have a doctors prescription and the supply must be brought to the health office. I do not have a supply of over-the-counter medications to give to students.
